Learning to Relax...

Over the summer, Louie has had a little break, with a couple of weeks off, as well as some time spent on ground work.

However, this month we've back out and about (for all those wondering!!!)

Louie warming up

One thing I really want to achieve with Louie, is getting him to relax away from home, especially around others. While he has always been reasonably straight forward to take to competitions, his work remains tense and he tends to dip behind the contact.

So, mid September, we headed to the dressage, just a very simple intro test to keep things easy. Louie was very excited to be back out with a busy dressage car park, but as soon as I was onboard, he was instantly more relaxed.

Heading into the warm up with plenty of time, we walked round on a loose rein for 15 minutes, taking everything in. With while poles and show jumping wings making up the warm up boundary, I expected Louie to take time having a look and not wanting to get too close, but he wasn't fussed in the slightest!! He warmed up beautifully, taking the contact, listening, and keeping the swing in his back.

We headed into the arena 6 minutes before our test, asking if we could use all the time, as again I expected Louie to be spooky with the boards....again, he wasn't!!

Unfortunately, the message to keep to our time didn't quite get passed to the judge, so you'll see in the video that I got flustered (which I shouldn't) so the first half of the test is a bit tense (my fault!!!)

After the test, we headed back to the warm up where Louie proved to continue to be relaxed, so I felt we had achieved what we had come to do. Back to the wagon for a wash off for Louie and a good munch on his hay!
